Purpose:
The Foundation’s purpose is to perpetuate the education of Americans, in particular those of school age. Helping to provide educational materials that teach civics and history, providing relevant and interesting teaching materials that highlight the contributions made and the results achieved by those men and women who served and died in the Armed Force Services of our country obtaining, preserving and protecting the freedoms and rights of Americans and our allies. The Foundation will promote educational curricula and teachings of the many sacrifices made by the men and women who have served our country from the War of Independence to today.
To teach of the role of the helicopter during the Viet Nam war and beyond, and to tell the stories of heroism, freedom and citizenship which resonate with children and adults alike, all with the goal of preserving and promoting peace and goodwill.
To cooperate, to the extent deemed feasible and desirable with other organizations in promoting education about freedom and the price of freedom and the roles of our service men and women who profoundly impact and protect our freedoms and whose lives also are profoundly impacted by their service to our country and in aid of our country’s allies.
To act as a permanent repository for archive materials regarding Vietnam and later military experiences.
History:
Three years ago a team of these veterans (and interested non-military civilians) took a fully restored Vietnam war bird known as "Huey 091" on a six week journey across the nation visiting numerous educational, civilian, and military venues - including all three of the service academies. This mission is chronicled at the website www.americashuey.com.
Since that historic journey, Huey 091 has been resting at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. There she will stay for at least the next 30 years as the centerpiece of the museum's "Price of Freedom" exhibit. "Huey 091" is the largest single artifact in the “Price of Freedom” exhibit.
Thousands of photographs were made as well as 90 hours of videotape chronicling this historic journey. Now, after three years, the stories, with video footage and photos are going to be edited into various education modules to be added to the curricula of children from elementary school through high school. This history of service and sacrifice to our country will be presented in a way that does not exist in today's textbooks. Already, school districts in Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania are committed to this project. Eventually, through the efforts of the Huey – 091 Education Foundation, these educational modules will be carried by hundreds of school districts across our nation.
The "Huey 091" project is just the beginning. Many other projects related to the Foundation’s purpose will be developed and presented to this nation's greatest resource, our youngest citizens.
Board Membership:
The Board is comprised of very distinguished citizens, many well known in the military aviation community - men such as General P.X. Kelley, USMC (ret) 28th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Richard Stephenson, MG (Ret) - member of the Army Aviation Hall of Fame, Randall Jones, CW5 (Ret) - member of the Army Aviation Hall of Fame, and other distinguished veterans and citizens.
Service on the Foundation Board is for philanthropic purposes only. No individual serving on the Board, nor any individual with any involvement as a committee person, is permitted to be compensated financially for their contribution of time and/or expertise.
